The City of Longmont is seeking a detail-oriented, dependable, and highly organized Property & Evidence Technician to join the Public Safety Department's Detective Operations team.
This civilian position plays an important role in supporting police investigations and the criminal justice process. Position Overview
The Property & Evidence Technician safeguards evidentiary, found, and safekeeping property held by the Longmont Public Safety Department. The position maintains accurate records throughout the receipt, storage, transfer, and authorized disposition of property and evidence.
Working closely with crime scene investigators, officers, detectives, prosecutors, and other department personnel, the technician helps preserve evidence integrity and ensure compliance with department procedures and applicable requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain the security and chain of custody of evidentiary, found, and safekeeping property.
- Maintain written and electronic records, including inventory, data entry, barcoding, storage, and property tracking.
- Review evidence packaging to ensure appropriate preservation, integrity, and longevity, including items containing blood, DNA, chemicals, plants, or drugs.
- Coordinate authorized property and evidence destruction, release, conversion, and auction in accordance with the Longmont Municipal Code and department procedures.
- Schedule appointments with property owners for authorized property release.
- Transport narcotics, evidence, information, and documentation to courts, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and other laboratories as needed.
- Coordinate authorized evidence viewings for District Attorney's Office personnel, defense attorneys, investigators, and other authorized individuals. Prepare items, monitor handling, and document access and transfers.
- Prepare and package evidence for court proceedings; document transfers and returns; and verify the condition, packaging, and storage location of returned items.
- Prepare specified police reports.
- Testify in court regarding evidence retention procedures and chain of custody.
- Prepare for and assist with annual audits of evidentiary, found, and safekeeping property.
- Train new employees and other department personnel, as assigned, on evidence packaging, retention, documentation, acceptance procedures, and applicable computer systems.
- Perform other duties as assigned and required.
Required Qualifications
- Education and experience equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
- At least two years of experience in records management, inventory control, warehousing, bookkeeping, or a related field.
- Possession of a valid Colorado driver's license.
- Ability to learn and adapt to software programs used in the Property & Evidence unit.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, maintain accurate documentation, and follow assignments through to completion.
- Ability to work effectively with department personnel and members of the public.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within a police agency.
- Knowledge of property and evidence room procedures.
- Experience with filing, data entry, inventory management, and recordkeeping.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Teams, and Excel.
- Experience managing property and evidence, including secure storage, chain-of-custody documentation, and authorized disposition.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Work is performed primarily indoors in public buildings under routine and occasionally stressful conditions. The position requires confidentiality, sound judgment, problem-solving skills, honesty, and integrity.
The technician may have frequent contact with members of the public who are angry, upset, or distraught. Work requires occasional driving; reading; verbal and written communication; near and far vision; the ability to distinguish colors; hearing; and sustained attention to detail.
The position involves handling potentially biohazardous materials, including bodily fluids, drugs, and carcinogenic chemicals, as well as various types of weapons. Physical requirements include standing, bending, reaching, and using ladders and/or carts.
Employees must be able to work scheduled shifts and accommodate irregular or extended work hours when required.
